Hugh Douglas “Doug” Stinson, age 82, of Elizabethtown, passed away on February 14, 2026, and went to be with the Lord.
He was born in Martin, Tennessee, on May 19, 1943, to Hugh and Sylvia Stinson. Doug was a 1961 graduate of Elizabethtown High School. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, where he served on the USS Darby. After his military service, he attended the University of Kentucky and graduated with a degree in electrical engineering in 1972. Doug retired from civil service at Ft. Knox where he worked as a project manager.
Doug was an intelligent, talented, and creative man. He designed and built two energy efficient homes. He enjoyed designing and building furniture and built several bedroom suites for his family, as well as many other pieces of furniture for them to enjoy, including cedar chests and a grandfather clock. He also designed and made several stained glass windows that his family and friends display in their homes. One of his favorite creations is a heart-shaped garden of daffodils as a reminder to his wife of how much he loves her.
He mostly loved being with his wife Kathy Stinson. She was his best friend and soulmate. In the last months of his life with his illness, everyone whom he met in the hospitals and assisted living facility, where he lived a short time, knew how much he loved his wife because he talked about her all the time. He also loved seeing and talking about his great-grandson William or “Sweet Willie” as he called him. William loved sharing his Poppy’s chocolate shakes and knew he could always get some just by smiling at his Poppy.
Doug was preceded in death by his parents Hugh and Sylvia Stinson.
He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 60 years, Kathleen Stinson, a.k.a. the candy lady; a son Adran Stinson of Elizabethtown; a daughter and son-in-law Arlie and Tom Hamilton of Hodgenville; a granddaughter Keely Hamilton (Zeke Phelps) of Bonnieville; a great-grandson William Phelps; another great-grandson on the way; and one sister Anna Jaggers of North Carolina.
Doug and his family chose cremation and there will not be a service.
Donations can be given in his memory to WJCR World Changers in Upton, KY, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
